What is Ballet?

Ballet is said to be a combination of choreography and art, scenic design, lighting, costume, graceful movements and usually solemn music. It is an artistic dance like no other, that can be used to express different emotions or to tell a story. Traditional classical ballet dance which was choreographed with elaborate costumes and staging has been replaced by the modern ballet dance styles which creates room for a variety of ballet dance forms

What is Pointe

Pointe technique is the part of classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet within pointe shoes. Pointe technique resulted from a desire for female dancers to appear weightless.

You must be age 12 yrs upwards and attend our pointe classes. Our Teacher will invite you to join this class if she feels you are ready to move forward with your training.

I also run yearly Contemporary exams with NATD which is highly beneficial for a young dancers journey as you will receive a certificate and grade from a professional examiner. My biggest aim as a teacher is that my students become the best dancers they can be whilst enjoying every second of it!

Meet the Teacher - Katie Eastwood

I’ve been teaching for over 15 years and am qualified with both the NATD and IDTA. I teach ballet, tap, contemporary dance and also teach music theatre and various other styles of dance.

I am honoured to be entering my 9th year of teaching with AJs school of Dance and feel very proud that having started with just two classes on a Saturday morning with no more than three students in, I now have 12 classes full of very hardworking and enthusiastic students!

I have trained professionally at Midland Academy of Dance and Drama and have worked overseas as a singer and dancer. I now work as a professional singer performing in many bands across the UK and have done for the last 10 years.
I throughly enjoy seeing the students develop and grow in confidence and have many students that have now moved on to train or perform professionally themselves.

I look forward to welcoming new students in 2020 and I am excited with what the New Year will bring to AJs!

Can you explain to someone wanting to join your class about the style?

Ballet is the foundation of all dance and teaches pupils the core disciplines required for all aspects and genres of dance. We begin from the early age of 2 1/2 and teach the correct posture and stance and gradually incorporate more technical steps and elements as the children progress throughout their grades. We work to the National Association of Teachers of Dancing syllabus but children are welcome to join any of the classes with no obligation to take exams however we do encourage all pupils to strive to achieve their best performance level.

Tap combines together fun rhythms and steps to exciting music whilst working towards the NATD syllabus for our technical work.

What will they learn & gain from your classes?

Students will learn the disciplines and core techniques of both ballet and tap in a fun and friendly environment whilst getting the opportunity to be involved in our annual show, exam sessions and plenty of exciting events.

How they will benefit?

Ballet will give students the groundwork for all aspects of dance and the ability to progress to a professional level should they wish to. Tap will give students an understanding of music and rhythm and the way we can interpret and combine rhythms to a new level!

Why choose your class?
My classes are the best combination of fun and discipline you could ask for! All abilities are welcome, all I ask for is dedication, hard work and big dreams!
